EUROPEAN PROJECT “ILA-LEAN Innovative Learning Approaches for Implementation of Lean Thinking to Enhance Office and Knowledge Work Productivity”

 ILA LEAN Official project website:

The ILA-LEAN project aims at developing didactic materials to improve knowledge concerning the implementation of Lean Thinking in the workplace. Most companies are aware of Lean Thinking, but it is generally usually only in practice in the production area. Many companies, however, have realised that there is much waste in other areas of the company such as in offices, therefore the knowledge and identification and thus elimination of waste would also be beneficial in these areas.

Objectives of the project are:

• Increase the cooperation among educational institutions and enterprises in EU for better employability

• Increase the synergic use of up-to-date technologies, in an integrated way, with a team work approach and personal development

• Improve the effectiveness of teaching and learning of vocational contents on lean in Office and Knowledge of how it works and the workplace

• Increase the opportunity for distance learning

• Upgrade and innovate existing training tools.

Countries involved: Italy, Poland, Norway, Portugal, Finland.

ILA-LEAN project takes into account the results of LEAN (2015-2017), a project guided by Centoform about Lean Thinking in manufacturing sector.

Erasmus+ project CoTraiN - “Collaborative Training Networks” on Apprenticeship and Dual Systems approved

logo cotrainThe Erasmus+ Belgium National Agency approved the project proposal named “CoTraiN – Create Collaborative Training Networks” involving Centoform VET Centre as Italian partner in a European consortium together with Belgium, Germany and Austria. The CEPAG (Belgium) will coordinate German (inab) and Austrian (öibf) partners which will coach Italian (Centoform) and Belgian partners (IFAPME and CEFA) building collaborative training pilot projects. We are all participating in the development of the system in our countries.  Training agencies, trade unions and enterprises will collaborate for the next three years from September 2016 to create innovative actions related to in-company trainingInnovative and experimental activities of trainees and apprenticeships rotation between companies will be displayed in a European framework for sharing practices and exchanges of information aimed at increasing youth employment, improving the knowledge and skills of future workers and to increase openness and competitiveness of European enterprises towards forms of Dual-system training, from compulsory schooling and throughout the whole learning cycle.

Several countries (Austria, Germany, Switzerland) have developed efficient alternative and complementary models by implementing collaborative trainings. A collaborative training means that a company provides vocational training together with one or more firm(s).

The project, formally supported by our Emilia Romagna County, will provide for the creation of guide lines and methodology for businesses, training institutions, schools, governmental agencies, and the impact on four European nations involved starting from the Dual system models of Germany and Austria, countries of European inspiration for work-based learning practices. Simultaneously international and regional meetings will be organized in order to sensitize the business community, schools, young people on project opportunities and competitive advantages for our companies in support of school-work based pathways.

In Italy we will focus on learners attending post-secondary VET training courses (namely ITS, IFTS in Italy) on mechanical subjects. The testing region, Emilia Romagna, northern Italy is characterized by a technical backbone made of mechanical industries (packaging, engines, metal work, mechanical engineering) representing the main employment sector.

We have been conceiving and discussing with local companies and our Regional VET authority 4 kind of Collaborative training Networks (CTNs) applied to different post-secondary EQF levels (18-30 years old), in order to choose the most significant and sustainable for the testing phase since September 2017 up to 2018. Another CTN under discussion might be on under 17 years old vocational learners. The Regional VET Authority, pushed by innovation brought by CoTraiN principles, agreed on experimenting a CTN on the IVth and last year of compulsory regional vocational training named IeFP for students aged 17 years old. In order to experiment the rotation of students in companies a second regional VET centre, owned by public authorities, and delivering IeFP courses from 15 to 17 years old will be involved, on own contributions, thanks to the regional authority support.

Project results will be disseminated during project implementation at local and European level and within the European Alliance for Apprenticeships, being Centoform an official member.

European Skills Week December 2016 – Vocational Skills Bus

Centoform  as Vocational Education and training center joined to the 1st EU skills week organized by the European Commission for guiding youth learners in choosing the right vocational paths for their future.

Together with Cento local municipality, schools and a local Youth Association a series of initiatives were organized involving students, families and companies, opening their doors for guiding youngsters to the right vocational choice.

Vocational skills Bus was a two months’ programme of seminars, open doors and visits in companies through non formal activities (Bus) for parents and students. Main aim: To get informed on the right vocational choice connected to right skills for future employability.

Some figures: More than 250 students, more than 100 parents and 50 professors involved. 6 companies opened their doors (large companies, SMEs) telling to students what specific skills they will look for in the future and what transversal skills are searched in winning candidates.

The Vocational Skills Bus will be transferred as good practice in 2017 through an Erasmus KA2 Action under construction with partners from Poland, Romania, Spain, Norway.

EUROPEAN PROJECT “BIM4PLACEMENT European key competences in building and construction”

BIM project is a capacity building project in the area of VET education, promoting cooperation and partnerships among 6 organizations (VET provider, Regional Authority, 2 universities, private company, European Association) and providing new methods for delivering training addressed to a variety of target groups.

Countries involved: Italy, Finland, Norway + one partner active all over Europe.

The project general aim is to deepen knowledge about Building Information Modelling (BIM) as a skills' development training subject for employability goals, upgrading existing training tools and professional qualifications and creating a network to promote work-based learning with special attention to apprenticeship.

BIM can be defined as a process involving the generation and management of digital representations of physical and functional characteristics of places. BIM softwares are used to plan, design, construct, operate and maintain many kinds of buildings and infrastructures. In Europe BIM is becoming more and more studied in VET schools, VET courses and university courses and applied in companies. It is becoming a new specialization with a high rate of employability.

In Italy this methodology is not jet sufficiently known and spread, while in other EU countries, especially in northern Europe, BIM is already very well know and used: Finland  is one of the earliest adopters of BIM, and it has been for years at the forefront of Building Information Modelling; in other northern european countries like Norway BIM research and development goes back to more than twenty years ago, and nowadays it’s one of the leading Countries using BIM with one of the European highest implementation of BIM among architects and installators.

Considering the lack of homogeneous tools validated at European level for training in BIM, this project has the aim of building a bridge between Northern Europe and Southern Europe: Italy will have the opportunity to learn from the European best experiences and consequently update the professional qualification related to building and construction design, while Finland and Norway will have the opportunity to enlarge their international BIM-related network of institution and companies and update their knowledge from mutual exchange of best practices. All together partners will create an innovative tool for training beginners in BIM in a wide range of training environments: high school, VET center, university and companies.

EUROPEAN PROJECT “How to give the students skills and means on their way to the European labour market - GISWELM”

GISWELM project is a Cooperation for innovation and the exchange of good practices project in the area of VET education, promoting partnership among 5 organizations (4 VET providers and 1 chamber of commerce) and providing new methods for delivering career guidance addressed to students (16-18 years old).

Countries involved: Italy, Spain, Germany, Denmark.

Main goal of the project “GISWELM” is to increase the employability and career perspectives of our students on EU-level by encouraging students to look for employment in economically thriving areas. In order to do so we want to improve their cultural knowledge and awareness to meet the requirements of possible future employers.

The project will lead to more qualified and confident future job-seekers, it will increase cultural knowledge among all involved parties and hopefully make local employers aware of the many opportunities in hiring also foreign students and  job-seekers in the future.

The project will put the cultural theories and models of Richard Gesteland into a contemporary setting, enlightening the synergies between culture and employability. Concrete evaluation criteria will be developed regarding employers’ needs and what the young must do to become more attractive at the European work market. Participants (students, teachers, companies) will become aware of the importance of cultural knowledge in the process of finding employment.

CENTOFORM, set up in 2001, is a Vocational Training Centre recognized with Quality Accredition on training by the Emilia Romagna Region, Italy, a region characterised by a strong dynamic economy and an important research tradition. We deliver qualified services in the following sectors: human resources development; vocational training for employees, unemployed, senior and young managers; professional lifelong learning and updating; courses for the enhancement of SMEs and for their human resources’ professional competences; ICT; business consulting; organization consulting.

The staff (25 employees and 15 external professionals) is composed by VET senior projects managers, administrative staff, senior and junior consultants with expertise in the fields of training, business planning, consulting, research, management and financial reporting on Italian, European and international funds and projects (E.S.F., W.B., LLP).

The VET Centre crated in time an operative multiregional and international relationship network with SMEs, public institutions, VET schools, universities and R&D centres. It is partner of Confindustria, the main italian industrialist association, and it works in collaboration with representatives and clusters of productive sectors at National, European and International level.
We hold 13 years proven experience in design and management of VET courses on mechanics and metal work (CAD-CAM designers, machine operators and other job profiles connected to the specific field), experiences in vocational training projects of qualification and requalification for enterprises after crisis.

EXPERIENCES AND FIGURES in the field of training and employability:
In 2015 Centoform has been appointed to run Employment Centers in Ferrara Province for an expected target groups of 2.000 to 5.000 unemployed people for counsellling and training activities; 2010 Centoform has been appointed by Emilia Romagna County to manage requalification courses for more than 900 employees coming from firms in crisis in the mechanical sector. Centoform has also been appointed by Puglia Region and the Ministry of Labour for managing a requalification project for 150 workers in the field of aerospace skills development in 2013. Centoform organized and managed, in strict partnership with social partners, enterprises and national public authorities, a particularly successful project in 2011-2012: it consisted in conceiving the whole Training Plan for retraining 116 redundant workers (former employees of the company British American Tabacco Italia S.p.a. and Franci Group S.r.l.) in Puglia Region. The 8 months training was aimed at immediate re-employment, and the employment rate after 6 months from the end of the training has been of 104 workers reemployed. The total budget of the managed project was Euro 770.000. As for LLP progrramme Centoform hosted an LLP visit in 2012 and its staff partcipated to 2 LLP study visits and 1 Grundtvig training in terms of skills investment for its key staff. We hosted a Young Entrepreneur in 2012 from Belgium.

In a difficult economic period, cooperation between local actors from the worlds of VET and work is fundamental to achieve the objectives of a smart, sustainable and inclusive economy, for an effective and durable rising of employment rate. This is important for Centoform because it developed an integrated system for matching skills’ supply and demand, with a proven specific experience in mechanical engineering sector,. The focus on the mechanical engineering sector is due to the local economic context: the territory of Emilia Romagna Region is characterized by a strong industrial vocation: highly integrated industrial clusters, highly specialized small and medium enterprises, a dense network of subcontracting and supply relationships, openness to inovation and international markets with a predominance of highly skilled manufacturing expertise.

For the economy of Cento (Ferrara County) , where VET headquarters are located, mechanical industry is the leading sector: it counts for approximately 70% of the total industrial panorama of Cento. Because of the high concentration of mechanical companies, Cento can be defined by itself a local manufacturing system, a mechanical district.
The economic crisis and the earthquake (May 2012) have severely affected this area, which is one of the most important production areas of the Region and the Country as a whole in terms of GDP. FIAT Chrysler (FCA now) for example produces diesel engines for US Jeeps models in Cento plant, employing 850 people, and the R&D department is an excellence unit in Italy as for diesel development.

Study visits VET sector

Centoform has organized and held a LLP Study Visit on issues connected to Vocational and Educational Training and employment.

The project “Understanding the local context and building networks to identify skill needs” focused on the depth and breadth of Vocational Education and Training (VET) with a particular emphasis on the relationships between different stakeholders such as Schools, Universities, Vocational Training organisations and Enterprises. The group studied in depth the different approaches adopted in Italy to VET with a focus on the Emilia-Romagna region and compared and contrasted this to experiences and cultures in the UK, Hungary, Romania, Poland and Turkey.

The Study Visit took place in Cento from the 6th until the 9th of November 2012 and it involved 8 beneficiaries from 6 different EU countries (Italy, Poland, UK, Romania, Hungary, Turkey)
